Even better 😍 Caravaggio arrived in Malta in 1607 in rather dubious circumstances having fled Rome, where he was wanted for murder. His β€˜Beheading of St. John the Baptist’ was commissioned for, and is still on display in, the Oratory here. Another of his most famous works, St. Jerome, is also in the cathedral. In Malta he was admitted to the Order of St. John, but one year later he was was imprisoned in Fort St. Angelo before escaping to Sicily, where he died.

Britain's War HQ was secretly housed within underground tunnels and caverns, below the Saluting Battery and Upper Barracca Gardens in Valletta. Parts of these tunnels were actually carved by the Knights, centuries ago! These rooms were used by Eisenhower, Cunningham, Montgomery and Tedder in preparation for Operation Husky (the invasion of Sicily). They then went on to become the Med Fleet HQ after the war.

Spent a large amount of yesterday wandering around Spent a large amount of yesterday wandering around megalithic temples. There are seven across Malta and Gozo. I popped to Tarxien, Hagar Qim (Hagar being Maltese for boulders and Qim meaning standing) and Mnajdra. These were constructed between the 4th and 3rd Milennium BC. The skill required to construct these, and the intricate carvings found within are just astounding. Many of the sites were in use all the way through to the bronze age, where in some cases sites were built over the top, or existing ones were used as cemeteries amongst other things. The local myth is that they were built by giants, of course!
